Bamboo Removal in Daytona Beach
Chopping bamboo down at the soil line just resets the clock. We dig out the rhizomes that feed it, sift the loosened soil for broken pieces and return later to check for new shoots, so the grove in your yard stays gone.
Removal That Starts Below the Surface
Bamboo grows from rhizomes, tough underground stems that spread horizontally a few inches to about twelve inches down. Any piece of that network can push up fresh canes. So mowing, cutting or spraying on their own seldom solve it. The hidden roots keep feeding the plant, and the grove often returns denser than it was.
We treat bamboo removal as a digging job, not a cutting job. The canes come down first, then we excavate the root mass, follow runners out to their tips and break up the soil to find the fragments that cause most regrowth. Small details decide whether you see bamboo again next summer, and those details are where we spend our time.
When the canes are creeping over from the yard next door, clearing your side alone will not hold for long. For that situation we walk you through a root barrier set along the property line, which stops the runners at the fence.
The Work on a Bamboo Job
- Canes cut and hauled off
- Every cane comes down at ground level, gets bundled and leaves on our truck. Live canes and rhizomes never go into your compost pile or yard debris, where they could take root again.
- Digging out the rhizome mass
- We excavate the main root clump and trace the runners outward until they end. In our sandy soil the rhizomes come out cleaner than in clay, but they also travel farther, so we follow them rather than guess.
- Sifting for fragments
- After the big pieces are out, we work through the loosened soil by hand and rake for broken rhizome bits. A piece the size of your finger can start a new plant.
- Root barrier installation
- A barrier makes sense when runners are crossing over from a neighbor, or when you would like to keep one contained clump for screening. We trench in heavy plastic barrier, set it deep, tip it slightly outward and leave a lip above the soil so runners cannot climb over it.
- Backfill and grading
- We fill the holes, tamp and level the area so it drains properly and is ready for sod, mulch and beds or a new planting plan.
- A follow-up check
- We come back after the area has had time to push any missed shoots, and we dig out anything that appears.
Warning Signs Bamboo Has Outgrown Its Spot
New canes in the grass
Shoots coming up through the turf, sometimes several feet from the grove, tell you the rhizomes are already running under your lawn.
Canes pushing against hardscape
Bamboo coming up through cracks in a patio, along a driveway edge or next to a pool deck can lift pavers and widen gaps over time.
Roots around irrigation or fences
Dense rhizomes can wrap irrigation lines and crowd fence posts. If sprinkler heads near the grove have stopped working right, the roots may be part of the reason.
A grove that keeps getting wider
If you trim it every season and it still takes more yard each year, the underground network is growing faster than you can cut. Warm, wet summers here speed that up.
Bamboo crossing the property line
Whether it is coming into your yard or heading toward a neighbor's, it is easier to deal with now than after it is established on both sides.
How a Bamboo Removal Job Runs
- 1
Walkthrough and estimate
We look at the grove, probe around the edges to see how far the runners go and note anything nearby that needs care, like irrigation, fences or plantings you want to keep. You get a clear written estimate that explains what we will remove and whether a barrier makes sense.
- 2
Cutting and clearing
On the work day we protect the lawn and beds around the access path, then cut and haul the canes so we can see the ground.
- 3
Excavation and sifting
We dig out the root mass and runners, then sift the soil for fragments. If we find buried irrigation lines, we work around them by hand and tell you about anything that was already damaged.
- 4
Barrier, backfill and cleanup
If you chose a root barrier, it goes in now. We backfill, grade, rake the area clean and haul away every bit of debris.
- 5
Return visit
We come back to look for new shoots and remove any we find, so a missed fragment does not turn into a new grove.

What Affects the Cost of Bamboo Removal
Every grove is different above and below ground, so we price bamboo removal after seeing it in person. Most of the work sits underground, in how far the runners have spread. The estimate is free, and it lists what is included so nothing changes on you later.
- Size and age of the grove
- A young clump is a few hours of work. A grove that has been spreading for years has a much larger rhizome network to dig out.
- Running versus clumping bamboo
- Clumping types stay in a tight mass and come out as one dig. Running types send rhizomes far from the canes, which means more trenching and sifting.
- Access and nearby features
- Tight side yards, fences, pool decks and irrigation lines mean more hand digging and slower, more careful work.
- Root barrier
- Adding a barrier depends on the length of the run and how deep we need to set it.
- Restoring the area
- If you want new sod or a planted bed where the bamboo stood, we can include that in the same estimate.
Bamboo Removal Questions
Something not covered here? (407) 499-8402
Can't I just spray it with weed killer?
Herbicide can weaken bamboo, but it usually takes repeated applications over a long stretch, and the rhizomes often survive and resprout. It also risks the plants and lawn around it. Physical removal of the rhizomes is the most reliable way to clear it.
Is there a chance it grows back?
Missed fragments can push up an occasional shoot, and that is the reason we sift the soil by hand and schedule a return visit. Anything that surfaces gets dug out then. Once the rhizome network is gone, the bamboo has nothing left to regrow from.
My neighbor's bamboo keeps showing up on my side. Can that be stopped?
Yes. We clear every cane and rhizome on your property, then trench a root barrier along the shared line so new runners hit a wall instead of your lawn. It is set deep enough to block them, with a lip left above grade so they cannot sneak across the top.
Will you damage my lawn or sprinklers?
We protect the surrounding area and hand dig near irrigation lines. Some disturbance at the grove's edge is unavoidable since that is where the runners are, but we grade it smooth, and we can repair or replace sod there as part of the job.
What can I plant where the bamboo was?
Once the area is cleared and graded, almost anything. Many people want a privacy screen back, so we can talk through landscape design options like a hedge that stays where you plant it.
