Stump Grinding in Daytona Beach
An old stump catches mower blades, trips guests and draws termites as it rots. We grind it down below the grass line, chase the shallow roots that spread out from it and leave the soil level and ready for sod, a planting bed or pavers.
Getting rid of a stump for good
Grinding turns a stump into small chips right where it stands. A heavy wheel lined with carbide teeth cuts across the wood a little at a time, so nothing is yanked out and your lawn is not left with a crater or ruts from a truck pulling on roots. It makes sense once the tree is already down and you want that corner of the yard back, whether it fell last month or has been sitting there for years.
The details decide whether the job actually lasts. A stump ground only to the surface leaves a hard knot that pushes up through new sod and keeps rotting under it, which leaves a sunken patch a year later. We grind deep enough that the wood will not interfere with grass, beds or pavers, and we deal with the chips properly instead of leaving a mound for you to sort out.
Still have a standing tree? Our tree trimming and removal crew can fell it first, and we will grind out what is left before we pack up and leave.

What stump grinding with us includes
- 01
Utility locates before we start
We have underground utilities marked through Florida's 811 system before any grinding. The wheel cuts several inches into the soil, so knowing where lines run is not optional.
- 02
Grinding below grade
We take the stump down well below the soil line, deeper where you plan to lay sod or set pavers. You tell us what is going in that spot and we grind for it.
- 03
Surface roots followed out
Many trees here spread thick roots just under the turf. We grind the ones that would bump your mower or lift new grass, not just the center of the stump.
- 04
Chip cleanup and backfill
Grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil. We can rake them back in, haul them away, or haul most of them and backfill with clean soil so the spot does not sink as the leftover wood breaks down.
- 05
Care around what you want to keep
We shield nearby windows, cars and siding from flying chips and work carefully around sprinkler heads, edging and bed borders.
Questions about Stump Grinding?
Call(407) 499-8402When a stump has overstayed its welcome
Suckers sprouting from the base
Some trees push up fresh growth from the stump and roots long after the trunk is gone. Grinding takes out the spot they grow from, so you are not snipping sprouts every few weeks.
Termites or ants have moved in
A rotting stump is soft, damp wood sitting right against the soil, which is exactly what termites and carpenter ants look for. Getting it out removes a food source close to your home.
The lawn will not grow around it
Grass thins out around old stumps and the mower can never get close. A flat, filled spot lets you mow straight across.
You are planning new sod, beds or a patio
Any new project in that spot needs the stump and its main roots gone first, or they will cause settling and bumps later.
It is a trip hazard
Low stumps hidden in grass catch kids, guests and anyone carrying something across the yard.
How a stump grinding visit goes
- 1
Free estimate and walkthrough
We look at the stump size, the roots around it, how we will reach it and what you want in that spot afterward. You get a clear price before any work is scheduled.
- 2
Locates and setup
Utility lines are marked ahead of the job day. On arrival we check gate width, lay protection where needed and flag sprinkler heads near the stump.
- 3
Grinding
The cutting wheel sweeps side to side, taking the wood down a little with each pass until it sits below the soil line. Then we move outward along the surface roots. A single stump usually needs well under an hour of actual grinding.
- 4
Cleanup and finish
We handle the chips the way we agreed, rake the area level and blow off walks and driveways. If you are adding grass, the spot is ready for our sod installation crew or yours.
What affects the cost of stump grinding
Stump grinding is priced by the job, not by a rough guess, and we give you that number during the free estimate. A few things move it up or down. Grinding several stumps in one visit usually costs less per stump than calling us out for each one separately.
- Diameter and wood type
- Wider stumps take longer, and dense hardwoods like oak grind slower than softer trees. Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody and grind differently.
- Depth and root work
- A stump ground for sod or pavers goes deeper than one ground for a mulch bed. Chasing large surface roots adds time.
- Access to the stump
- Narrow gates, fences, slopes and stumps tight against a wall or slab affect which machine we can use and how long it takes.
- What happens to the chips
- Leaving grindings in place costs least. Hauling them off and backfilling with soil adds material and labor.
Stump grinding questions
How deep do you grind the stump?
We grind below the soil line and go deeper where you plan to lay sod, plant or install hardscape. Tell us what is going in that spot during the estimate and we will grind for that. The deeper root system beyond that point breaks down naturally over time.
Will grinding kill the roots so the tree does not grow back?
For most trees, removing the stump below grade ends regrowth. A few species send up shoots from remaining roots for a season, and those die out once they are cut a couple of times. Palms do not resprout from the stump at all.
Can you grind a palm stump?
Yes. Palm stumps are stringy and fibrous rather than solid wood, so they grind into a coarse, soft material that we usually haul away instead of leaving in the hole. If the palm is still standing, our palm tree pruning and removal service can take it out first.
Will the grinder damage my sprinkler system?
We mark every head we can see near the stump and grind around lines carefully. Irrigation pipes sometimes run closer to a tree than expected, and if one is nicked we tell you on the spot. Our irrigation crew can repair it so your zones run right.
Can I put sod right over the spot?
Not over raw grindings. Wood chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down and the spot settles. We remove most of the chips and backfill with soil so new grass roots into something stable.
Is there a way to spread out the payments?
Yes. We offer financing up to $100,000 on 2–12-year terms, with no prepayment penalties if you want to clear the balance sooner. One stump on its own seldom needs it, but it is useful when grinding is part of a larger yard makeover.
